Less is More: Fundamentals of Minimalist Web Design
26 Oct 2010 No Comments
Fighting the battle against clutter is something every designer undertakes, whether it’s on their own site or when designing for a client. Your web site’s design should enhance your site’s purpose by putting the focus on the content and being usable by everyone. Taking the extra time to ensure no detail is left overlooked will produce an effective and attractive website.

Define the Site’s Purpose
Your site needs a clearly defined purpose to eliminate any confusion from the start…
First things first – before opening up your favorite graphics app to design your hot new minimal site, you will need to establish what the site is going to be used for. Your site needs a clearly defined purpose to eliminate any confusion from the start by having a single, strong focal point. It may be to display award winning photographs to potential clients, share breaking technology news or used to sell your hand made pet toys. Start by making a simple statement:
My site needs to ______________________________________.
- Educate teens on the dangers of texting and driving
- Showcase award winning photos to potential clients
- Sell hand-made, premium dog toys
By clearly defining a purpose early on, you will be able to use it to help keep your design on track. As you work through the design elements, continue to ask yourself questions such as:
- Will this compliment and reinforce my site’s purpose?
- Is this really needed or am I just filling space?
- Will this be distracting from my site’s purpose?
Anything you add to the site that does not reinforce your site’s true purpose can be a distraction, weakening your overall message. The additional items must compliment your focus.
Your site selling high-performance pogo sticks does not need to include a link to your stock photography portfolio, no matter just how awesome it is.
This isn’t the time for things you want on your site, it’s what is needed that is truly important. You only have a few seconds to convince your visitors to stick around and read your message.
Better Together

事業是一個很大的課題。
能遇上一個能令你知足的女友已經很好﹐
剩下來的﹐就是想怎樣把幸福帶給我們﹐讓我們拖著手繼續走。
“Jack Johnson – Better Together”
There is no combination of words I could put on the postcard
And no song that I could sing, but I can try because this is your heart and this is
Our dreams and they are made out of real things
Like a shoebox of photographs with sepia-toned loving
Love is the answer at least for most of the questions in my heart, like
Why are we here? And where do we go? And how come it’s so hard?
It’s not always easy and sometimes life can be deceiving
I’ll tell you one thing, it’s so much better when we’re together
Mmm, so much better when we’re together
Yeh, we’ll look at the stars when we’re together
Well it’s so much better when we’re together
Yeh, it’s so much better when we’re together
All of these moments just might find their way into my dreams tonight
But I know that they’ll be gone when the morning light sings
Or brings new things for tomorrow night you see
They’ll be gone too, to many things I have to do
But follow these dreams might find their way into my day to day scene
I’d be under the impression, I was somewhere in between
With only two, just me and you, not so many things we got to do
Or places we got to be, we’ll sit beneath the mango tree now
Yeh, so much better when we’re together
Mmm, we’re somewhere in between together
Well, it’s so much better when we’re together
Yeh, so much better when we’re together
I believe in memories because they look so,
So pretty when I sleep
And when I wake up you look so pretty sleeping next to me
But there is not enough time
And there is no, no song I could sing
And there is no combination of words I could say
But I will still tell you one thing
We’re better together
We so much better when we’re together
We so much better when we’re together

大自然太吸引了﹐忍不住要快點走出郊外﹐與大自然親近一點。
辛勞的日子﹐會使人忘記生存價值﹐
大自然會提醒我們﹐生存有價!

A Showcase of Watercolor in Web Design
03 Apr 2010 No Comments
Watercolor is such an old school element. Artists have been using watercolor for hundreds of years, and web designers have adopted the style for good reason.
Watercolor is a great way to add depth, interesting subtle textures and colors. It can really give your site an authentic, natural feel.
The examples compiled in this collection use watercolor in different ways; whether it’s for the main graphic of the site or the more subtle and faint hints that get you to look twice.
Watercolor has been around for a century and I know most of you will say it’s a trend, but you can’t argue with something that has pioneered painting and art.
